Wine & Food Tour

Milan stands out for its broad and diverse culinary offering, which brings together tradition, innovation and international influences.

In this context, talking of typical cuisine from a strict standpoint is complex, since the city offers a continually evolving culinary landscape, representative of different cultures and regions, incorporating both tradition and exotic influences.

One of the most famous traditional Milanese dishes is risotto alla milanese, prepared with saffron. Its origins relate to a tradition dating back to the 16th century: according to the most widespread account, some Flemish master glassmakers used saffron to colour their glass, and on the occasion of a festival, one of them suggested adding it to the risotto. The result, with its characteristic gold colour, was an immediate success.

Alongside this, Milanese cuisine incorporated numerous dishes linked to local tradition, including gnervitt, made from boiled and dressed veal tendons, and mondeghili, a meatball dish originally made at home with leftovers, but now a restaurant staple.

Some of the stand-out secondi piatti, or main courses, include breaded veal chop and the famous ossobuco, a cut of veal shin cooked with the marrow.

To round off your meal, panettone is the city's symbolic sweet which is now internationally famous, and has received PGI recognition.
