Liberty in Milan

22-10-2020

A journey through Art Nouveau, the artistic style that characterizes many neighborhoods in Milan. These include the Porta Venezia area, Corso Magenta, and the Monumental Cemetery—often described as an “open-air museum”—due to the significant presence of statues by artists and sculptors who, between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, explored this emerging artistic style.

The Art Nouveau tour at the Monumental Cemetery invites visitors to discover the elegance of Art Nouveau forms, its poetic spirit, and its leading experts: from Enrico Butti to Leonardo Bistolfi, from Bazzaro to Adolfo Wildt: Art Nouveau flowers and Symbolist poetics, at a time in history when the synergy between the grand, ornate style and the monumentality of the Cemetery made Milan one of the capitals of European taste and the avant-garde.

Art Nouveau in Porta Venezia

Porta Venezia is the area of Milan where Art Nouveau found widespread application in the applied arts. The buildings in the area are tangible examples of this style, with their ornate railings adorned with flowers.

Be sure to visit Casa Galimberti, one of the most original examples of Milanese Art Nouveau: wrought ironwork, floral motifs in concrete, and above all, the realistic depiction of the ceramic tile cladding. The clients, who were construction entrepreneurs, were among the first advocates of the new style in Milan. Equally beautiful are Casa Guazzoni and Casa Campanini, the former Dumont cinema, and the Kursaal Diana.
